Product Description

Earth is under siege by an alien race. The Strogg are cybernetic warriors--a mechanical frame and decaying body parts stabilized by flesh consumed in a systematic annihilation of other species and civilizations. In a desperate attempt to survive a Strogg attack on Earth, an armada of Earth's finest warriors is sent to take the battle to the Strogg home planet. Earth's initial assault force is nearly annihilated immediately, but one marine manages to infiltrate the base, bring down their planetary defense systems, and kill the Strogg's collective brain and leader--the Makron. Earth assumed the destruction of the Makron would end it all, but it didn't.

That's where QUAKE II leaves off and QUAKE 4 begins.

The Strogg are quickly regrouping. However, with the Stroggs planetary defenses still destroyed, Earth's forces can deliver a full and final assault. This time, you're not alone. You are Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad, and part of Earths next invasion wave. An army of soldiers are fighting with you and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles are at your disposal in this heroic and epic battle between worlds.

Graphics update

In my mind, Quake 3 is the finest FPS game ever made and Q4 simply offers a graphics update to this.

Great game, unfortunately there are no bots and too few people online to make it worth buying.

why did they bother?

I cannot understand why they have made this so badly as it is so similar compared to doom3; The same dull lighted levels, the same repeditveness (except worse) and that just makes the game get ever more repedative and LIKE THE DOOM 3 ending... it sucks.

ID has stuffed up all of the endings in Doom 3, Doom 3 EXP, Quake 4; there is just no point in getting this game.

I also wanted the multiplayer to be different to quake 3, yet it is vertually the same... even most of the maps are the same (just better graphics)

I have been really dissapointed with ID's approach to these games and i regreat buying them all

No surprises.

It's very much like Doom 3. Same look and feel, similar horror feel and if you liked that game you'll like this. But it also has many of the same problems, like the same monotonous level design. Although it's clear a lot of work went into the levels, they're just so dull and all look the same. There are a few outside levels where you drive vehicles but they're very bland. Compared to Quake 2's level design, Q4 is crap in comparison. They are totally linear too and there's only ever one way to go. Yawn.

The missions are always the same, hit a switch to activate something. They do different things but it's more or less just reach some control panel and hit a switch. That's it.

My biggest gripe is the pop-up monsters. Although not as bad as D3, all encounters are triggered by hitting a spot on the map, then the Stroggs run in and attack you. You will never come across Stroggs patrolling a corridor or monitoring a control panel or something, in other words behaving naturally as they might if you were there or not (like Q2). I don't know if it's just me who has a problem with this. They even resort to respawn in later levels where enemies beam in as you kill them, and the end is so hard it's laughable.

On the up-side, the Strogg themselves are quite cool and completely lethal. It's cool having other marines to fight along side of too, but they will inevitably die and I hated that. I wish there was a command to get them to stay put.

Not a bad game just nothing very interesting or inspiring. I can only recommend it if you just love this kind of game.
