Battlestations: Midway offers a totally new approach to air, sea and underwater combat, accurately reflecting the atmosphere and situation in the Pacific during 1942. Players take direct control of battleships, aircraft carriers, submarines and planes in a 'free-control' environment, with seamless switching between any of the units under your command: engage in dogfights with enemy fighters through flak-infested skies, utilise the silent attack of your submarine to unleash torpedoes on unsuspecting enemies, or command the awesome firepower of an entire carrier group.
Featuring a number of game modes, including single-player campaigns for both Japanese and American sides, 'career' missions focusing on specific units and broadband multiplayer modes for up to 16 players, Midway is a game on the grandest scale, bringing the air and sea battles of the Pacific to life like never before.
Battlestations: Midway is set in the Pacific Ocean and the scale of both the environments and battles accurately reflect this. The default map size for most missions range from 20x20km to 40x40km and will expand to a huge 50x50km for the biggest battles.
As an accurate representation of the war in the Pacific, Battlestations: Midway presents authentic models of every ship, plane and vehicle of the period.
Features:
- 45+ classes of ship
- 24 classes of plane

Unbelievable no skirmish AI
Reviewed by John from Dairy Flat on February 24th, 2007
I picked this up locally as i wanted it for the weekend
( had no time to drive into auckland ), to have a go at a LAN game with a mate against AI
I was shocked to find that there is no multiplayer skirmish
AI to play with or against. How can a game these days not include that.
I dont play online ,no DSL where i live anyway.
I thought to play on my LAN with a mate against AI
fat chance it seems, and i have had this confirmed by the developer via email this morning
Since this was my primary interest in a game my rating is low and ive just listed it on trademe to recoup some $$ toward something that does :)
Dissapointing it looked like a fun game

Just a word of warning
There is no multiplayer Skirmish AI
So forget about sitting down with a mate on a LAN and
playing versus the AI, there is none. Which was my only reason for buying never considered there would be no skirmish AI.
I had the developers confirm this.
A must play for war gamers

Battlestations makes a progressive contribution to computer gaming with its skillful blend of action and strategy. You can command your units from the tactical map and can then take control of any unit to join in on the action. For instance, you might co-ordinate an attack on an aircraft carrier and then take control of the airplane making the vital torpedo run on the carrier. Alternatively, you might take control of your battleship pounding enemy units from a distance, while directing your crew to damage control to keep your ship afloat. The larger battles require real skill and you need to learn the strategies and tactics of naval warfare to succeed. The user interface is excellent and gives you just the right amount of control at all times.
While the graphics are not the selling point of the game, there certainly is no lack of attention to detail and battlestations brings to life what could easily be boring ocean dominated battle scenery. I absolutely love the detail of the battleships.
Although a secondary factor for me, there is a story you follow in the single player game that helps to set the scene and fill out the game experience. The game overall certainly gives me a feeling for what it must have actually been like to be involved in the sea battles of the time. I haven't managed to experience the multi-player yet, but I'm certainly looking forward to it.
There is a learning curve associated with this game, but ultimately its your skill, courage and determination that decide whether you win the battle of midway. I give this game 5 stars because its down right fun, and for its progressive contribution to computer war gaming. Can't have been easy for Eidos to pull this one off.
