Product Description

The story of Final Fantasy XII takes place in a world called Ivalice, in an age when magic was commonplace and airships plied the skies, crowding out the heavens. A world of many races, the humes, bangaa, viera and, of course, moogles, all call Ivalice home.

War was on the horizon. Seeking to strengthen its base of power, the great Archadian Empire had been invading and subjugating its neighboring kingdoms one by one. The small Kingdom of Dalmasca was one such kingdom.

When the occupying Archadian forces established a new consul in Dalmasca's Royal City of Rabanastre, it caught the attention of Vaan, an urchin living on the streets. To Vaan, the Empire was a hated enemy who had taken the life of his brother—his last surviving family member. Vaan hatched a plan to sneak into the castle housing the new consul and unburden him of one or two of his treasures. But before he would have the chance, Vaan got far more than he bargained for; a resistance movement of former Dalmascan soldiers rising up against the Archadian Empire was launching an assault! Amid the ensuing confusion that engulfed the castle, Vaan saw something he could scarcely believe. There, among the members of the resistance, was the figure of the sole remaining heir to the Dalmascan throne, the Princess Ashe, who'd been given up for missing...

Our story follows Vaan, Ashe, Vaan's friend Penelo, the sky pirate Balthier, his partner Fran and many more on an adventure through Ivalice that traces the mysteries behind the Archadian Empire's invasion. Since 1987, the Final Fantasy series has sold over 60 million units. Final Fantasy XII carries on the proud tradition, bringing new ideas to the series and innovation to the RPG genre.

Final Fantasy XII features:

  • Every aspect of the graphics brings color to the world of Ivalice—blues and oranges reminiscent of the Mediterranean evoke a landscape alive with a mix of European and Arabian imagery.
  • Airships feature prominently in Final Fantasy XII. They come in all shapes and sizes—the main airship in this story is a medium-sized craft that measures over 1,000 feet from bow to stern. Airships are used for everything from the trading of goods to the waging of war.
  • The story isn't all that's new—experience an evolved battle system with numerous features never before seen in the Final Fantasy series:
    • 1. ADB – Active Dimension Battle is a shift from ATB (Active Time Battle), lending more realism to the battle by allowing seamless switching between the field and the battle scene.
    • 2. Load time between the field and the battle scene that is unrelated to actual gameplay has been eliminated, ensuring smoother gaming.
    • Besides time elements, such as the attack timing, the player can fully utilize the field geography in terms of differences in ground level, intricate terrain, places with low visibility and the like.
    • Enemy monsters can also take advantage of the varied tactics that ADB offers, possessing sophisticated AI to ambush parties, back up their comrades and restore HP.
  • Ivalice sounds better, too, with in-game events and movie scenes presented in Dolby Pro Logic II.

    A bit cheesy
5 stars Reviewed by Stanley from Auckland, NZ on April 2nd, 2008
The only thing i liked about this game is the fact it had cute looking moogles shown on the image section. Other than that the story is horrible as people are getting bored of kings and queens and final fantasy was in the best direction when it was turn based as making it 3D kind of makes it annoying during changing angles.

    Good ideas, bad story.

I've played all of the Final Fantasy titles since the release of FF6, and this one also kept me going for ages.
The Gambit and license systems are both great ideas. The graphics were outstanding.
One thing i didn't like about the game was it's story line. The story line was more political and realistic but not as strong and
    powerful as the other FFs.
The story line lacks the Final Fantasy feel and the music weren't as great and memorable as the previous titles.
If the title was Final Politics, it would have made more sense. Just my opinion.

Great RPG, if you can handle it!

Let's just get one thing straight, as an RPG this game rocks!! But you got to go into this with the right expectations. This is not a horrible love story like previous games, in fact if you're one of those weirdo's that likes games with an overdone, overly long melodramatic love story (like the posters below obviously do) then this is NOT the game for you.

But if you like a thoughtful, mature and most importantly realistic story set in a fantasy universe then this is the game for you. Understand that there IS character development, it's just on the other side of the coin. The story behind the mian villain of this game is a very well developed one, and the main object of the game is to get you to see the struggle from HIS perspective. Oh, and this game was meant to be played with the side quests, they explain a WHOLE lot more of the story.

Other than that, the gameplay of this game blows all other RPG's out of the water. Gone are the random battles, and in are the Uber strategic "real" time encounters. While it might take a while to get used to (my first huge battle under Gambit controlled AI was very confusing to say the least), once you have gotten used to it it'll be hard to go back to those games that forced you to sit through one random encounter after another, mindlessly commanding each and every member of your party to attack over and over and over again.

The long and short of it is, if you love RPG's and think you're ready to break out of the girly mould that previous Final Fantasy games have dwelled in, then you have to pick up this game. It's THAT good!!

    Hmm..

From my experience of playing FF series, i have found the older games to have much better story lines than the newer games? ff7 had a great story line IMO, and is aruguably the best ff game. I thought 8 had a pretty good story line too, and i didnt mind 9 either. If i had to choose one or the other between having a good story line and bad graphics, or a bad story line but good graphics, i must say that i would prefer to have a better story line. Good characters and a story to go with it is what makes a game for me anyway. I am not a FF game developer but i am hoping they have not forgotten how to make a good story plot for the upcoming games.

I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series and just like all the other die hards out there, waited eagerly for XII to be released... and what a waste of time that was.

I could almost cry over how bad this series has turned. I stuck up for the FF games graphics when my friends gave me hassles over VII, I defended their mushy plotlines (VIII...) and I even commended X-2 because even though it wasnt true FF, at least they had improved the battle system some...

But XII... there are no redeeming factors for me to defend. I finished XII yesterday, after 60 hours and with an average level of 50. And whats more, I went into the ending (from where the boss battles start) not even knowing I was about to finish the game! The story was absolutly shot.

XII's highlight would be its graphics, they are great (not that much better than X's though) but I would happily go back to my Final Fantasy VII polygon friends for a mere taste of real storyline and characters that were well developed and that you felt an actual connection with.

I give the game a 2 star rating, simply because of my loyalty to Square (Enix) but if XIII doesnt pick the game back up... well...

Very, very wicked!! The gambit and license system was a little daunting at first- but now? Well, i'm on round two and up for a third so there! Graphics and characters rock!! The only slight, teeny weeny problem that i have with this otherwise brilliant game is the storyline. I was left with a kind of 'so...' look at the end. But the gameplay and everything else totally make up for that so who cares!! I'm maybe thinking of getting a second copy for safekeeping... (cough)

    Is this FF?

After playing the game for about 12 hours, I just dont feel like playing anymore. I own all FF games from 7 to 12 (ex 11) and have to say this is probably the worst.
It strays too far from the path set by the others in the series, with a weak story line, pretty average voice overs and after ditching the random encounters, seems like its more a MMORPG rather than an epic single player experience like 10 was.
Graphics are better than the rest naturally, and the new licence system is a comewhat poor clone of the spheregrid from 10.
IMO Square shouldn\'t pushed the limit abit too far, and while change is usually good, in this case I dont think so. Well I guess its time to have another go at 10 while waiting for 13 to be released. Hopefully it will stick witht he time tested FF formula

I am a huge FF Fan and this game is yet to dissapoint...
The new-found Gambit system is a GREAT enhancement! I can sit and eat dinner while training my characters up, due to the fact that gambits (save that you have the right ones) can battle for you! They can get a bit tedious when you are trying to perform specific tasks, but thats when you TURN THEM OFF!!! :)

Another cool feature are then "mist abilities":
-Espers are awsome in that fact that they act like just another party member that do high amounts of damage, plus each espers overdrive displays an awesome CGI scene followed by mass amounts of damage!
-The Quickening Chains (quickenings being the FFXII version of Limit Breaks/Overdrives) also allow for 'weaker' characters to have that chance at getting the stronger enemies down for some good EXP!!!

I must admit, that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but in the case of mine... I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

    Well Done SquareEnix!

The game system is a good update to the series, is about all the good I have to say about this latest Final Fantasy (Which I was a huge fan)

The characters are horribly weak and boring, so much so that I've stopped playing alltogether. The music is sometimes just OK, and other times just aweful and corny. The Monster models are the worst designs I've seen in a FF game, XI online ones are far far better everytime. The story is just average, made worse by the bland characters inhabiting it.

It took them 5 years to make the worst final fantasy in the series, Horrible horrible effort SE you just lost one fan.

Absolutely wonderful. The battle system is a godsend to anyone who remembers just how tedious random encounters are, and understands the fact that ADB is simply CTB (from FFX) minus battle map. Sure, you can walk around, but you still wait for your action meter to fill up so you can tell your character to execute a move, just likie in previous titles.

Except you have Gambits to help you, a nice addition that for some mysterious reason is the end of the world to some people. As if there is anything strategic or fun about meshing X to 1-shot kill enemies. Its there is so that you can do away with mudane commands and streamline your battling experience... But if you absolutely can\\\'t deal with it, well, it\\\'s an option to TURN GAMBITS OFF. Not that I would, because repeatedly casting half a dozen Magick to buff up isn\'t fun, but well.

The victory melody is still there, BTW. Play a bit more than the intro and you'll hear it.

Licenses and Magick are pretty good, although most techniques are rather useless and seemed like fillers to the really good stuff. The only flaw of the License board is that its too small; without even trying you can complete the whole board 2/3 of the way through. Some people would probably get upset if (say) Sword 5 isn\\\'t right next to Sword 4, but for most going diagnols once or twice is no reason to get angry.

The story is also very nice. It has a lot of depth, with interesting twists and turns. That is of couse only if you can be bothered listening to the dialogues. Both graphics and music are top notch, as we would expect from a FF title. So overall, definitely the crowning glory of PS2.

    Great addition to the series!!

First of all, you're either gonna love this game or hate this game, as is obvious if you scroll through a few of the reviews posted on this page. But make no mistake, FFXII is a great addition to the series. FF7 was extremely overatted, FF9 was a dissapoinment, FF10 had the worst voice acting ever, while FF8 was prefect.

FF12 is a lot like FF8. Instead of having one hero in the game that all other characters just seem to follow, this is a real ensemble tale. The story is also one of the best you'll see, although many people hate it since it doesnt follow the usual boring "save the world from such and such with such and such powerful weapon". The story is dark, complex, and a real joy to see it unfold. Even if you've seen every trailer or gameplay vid out there, you have no idea what's in store for you.

The combat in this game is the best ever seen, but once again a lot of people hate it. If you're the type of person that loves having your exploration interupted once every 30 secs, and you love tediously telling every one of your party to attack each and every foe, while you all stand in nice formations, then this is NOT the game for you. If you prefer to concentrate on the strategic areas of battle rather than the mundane tasks of old games, then you will love this.

This is without a doubt, a great addition to the series. But, if you would prefer that games never evolve, just keep playing your Master System and leave the real games to the rest.

This game, over all, is playable and really not that bad on its own. You expect a certain level of quality when it comes to the Fantasy mainline titles and this one has been severely overlooked.
Now, this game has alot of great, fresh new ideas. The problem, however, is that these ideas are implimented sometimes so badly that you wonder how they ever got approved. Especially for a game that has been in development for around six? years now.
The License Board system is Squares attempt at further opening up character development from where FFX's Sphere Grid. While this sounds great, it completly fails as the placement of licenses at times seems completly random, within their own semi-sub groups.
While most people can look past this, the fact that most Technick and Magick licenses end up being almost completly useless in favor of straight up melee attacks and White Magick due to the seemingly MMO-esque nature of ADB system and the automation of the Gambit system, is absurd.
ADB - Sounds good, plays bad. No more random battles and no more infinite load screens etc. all sound great but converting the game into real time, almost MMO style combat removes alot of the strategic elements that random battles had. Now you just program a set of melee AI arguments with what-if healing statements using the Gabmit system for your party and away the game goes.. playing itself, while you instead of being appart of the monotonous MMO looking combat, are now just a spectator. Not to mention the fact that the famous FF Victory music is now gone!
I better stop.. I want to like this game but the more I play and the more I think about it, the more upset and dissapointed I get.

    Terrible, just terrible

    i'm a little confused!!

people are coming up with strange reasons for whining about the licence and gambit systems lol...
in particular, there was a comment made about how you only get one or two licence points per battle and need to save up heaps for any worthwhile abilities... after playing for a few hours the other day and not having added any new abilities to my character, aside from the one that you do in tutorial fashion, i had hundreds of licence points :P~
and it's not like you blow them on just anything, you look for the ones available to you at that time or those that you think will be soon enough and get them...
of course you're going to run out of points if you spend them on all the abilities you can't use yet anyway!!
    i dunno... i don't think it's been a problem at all...
and the gambits are wicked!! i'm not gonna go on and on about why lol... :P~

any final fantasy or rpg fan in general should like this game!!
sure the new battle system is a shock at the beggining, i was skeptical, but after a couple o' battles you get right into the swing of it and i think that this battle system is on par with old turn based (especially once you get the gambits going!!) :)

your usual final fantasy graphics, AWESOME characters (i love the rogue tomato!! :P~ and the cactoids!!), wicked movies, wicked music, wicked GAME!!

classic line too for if you do get the game (not a spoiler don't worry):
listen out at the beginning for when basch is talking to reks and says "young... so young..."
that combined with the way he's staring off into space/looking at reks fully makes it sound like he's says "yum... so yum!!" lol :P~ ahhh, siftiness

From graphics to sound to gameplay, the latest Final Fantasy doesn't disappoint.

Graphics are some of the best on any platform, and looks truly amazing on the PS2. Gameplay is very fun and very deep.

The license and gambit system does confuse a bit in the beginning, but doesn't take long to latch on to. They add a lot of depth to the gameplay, and really fun to use. The new battle system is lots of fun and many ways better then the previous games. It doesn't repetitive at all because even though all you do is command your characters to attack in the beginning, you\'re gonna have to cast magic spells that enhance their stats, let them heal by themselves and more later. Using the gambit system correctly with a bit of thinking can really be rewarding too.

The storyline is more politically focused then the previous, and it does shine, although it takes a while for it to do so. In the beginning it can seem unimportant but in good time it does show just how good it is.

Voice acting is terrific. It lets all the characters come across as being interesting and not boring or annoying. And although the music from the game not as catchy or memorable as the previous Final Fantasy games, it still shines on its one.

The game is also around 40+ hours long, and adding all the side quests it could last you well over a 100 hours. With that being said, this game is totally worth its purchase price.

In the end, this game does prove that Square Enix's Final Fantasy series is very consistent. Final Fantasy XII a must own for any casual (like me) or serious RPG fan. It won't disappoint.

After reading the review from IGN, I could not wait to play the game. However, the game was a bit of a disappointment when I got to play it. The battle system is boring and tend to get repetitive, the gambit system is a bit useless, the license grid is very limited and the storyline wasn't very strong. Though saying so, the game does have quite a reasonable amount of positive aspects. FFXII is probably THE best looking PS2 game up to date, Quickenings and Summons are a visual treat, the landscapes are very big and it is possible to actually see where you want to go to from miles away. There are many weapons available, from Swords, Katana, Ninja Swords, Axes, Hammers, Staffs, Spears to Bows and Guns... Main storyline takes about 50-60 hours to complete, add on all the hunts and the other sidequests and you should be able to exceed 100 hours easily.

In conclusion, though being a bit overrated, this is still one of the finest games on the PS2. If you're a Final Fantasy fan, you wouldn't want to miss out on this one.

I love the Final Fantasy series as I'm sure most of you do. I can't wait til this title hits our shores.

IGN just voted FFXII the best Role-Playing Game of 2006, and if you read the reviews posted by them and other trusted gaming websites you'll see that it lives up to all expectations.

Granted, I haven't played it yet, but outside of FFX-2, when did a FF game ever disappoint you that much that you said out loud "I have wasted my money!"? I should think never. Obviously there are star titles that stand out above the others, but all in all FF delivers and delivers constantly.

Here's what IGN had to say:
"What makes a role-playing game what it is? Some say that it's a combination of character development and an extensive plot. Others claim that it's all about item collection and conversations with NPCs. Regardless of which school of thought you subscribe to, one thing is for sure - Square Enix's Final Fantasy XII is in possession of all those descriptors and more.

Set in the war-torn world of Ivalice, Final Fantasy XII was definitely the year's ultimate RPG experience. Bigger and more extensive than its competition, it took six extremely different personalities and challenged them with one important task: to stop the unstoppable. Pitting our heroes against the powerful Archadian Empire, Final Fantasy XII gives players a little bit of everything... fulfilling combat, a cool upgrade system, a powerful narrative, and true artistic panache. Best of all, it plays differently from every other game in the series before it -- truly making it the most unique Final Fantasy adventure since FF Tactics on the original PlayStation. It's a must own."

Well there you go. I hope I don't have to eat my hat come Feb 23rd.

The latest Final Fantasy to hit NZ will not fulfil many fans expectations.

FFXII looks fabulous, the music is wonderful, the characters are a delightfully quirky bunch and the voice actors are superb. However, the gameplay lacks any punch, the gambit and licencing systems are a huge disappointment and the number and length of FMVs will bother you. In fact, if you set your gambits correctly all you're required to do is move your character from one FMV to the next, so much so that it actually feels like you're 'playing' a movie.

The licencing system is a poor man's Sphere Grid, which was so successful in FFX. Only 1 or 2 licence points (lp's) are awarded per battle so be prepared for a lot of battles before you learn any useful skills. And on your way to learning good skills you will be required to 'waste' many lp's on unwanted skills merely to reach the ones you want, as they're not laid out in straight lines. Be prepared to have weapons, armour and spells in your inventory that you're unable to use until you have the licence to use them.

Programmable AI, called Gambits, are used in battle which means that you can programme each person in your party to do almost exactly what you want, when you want. This means that battles can be fought without any input from you at all once you have the character's gambits set to your taste.

To sum up, I believe that Final Fantasy XII will either be loved or hated by fans, but few will be indifferent to it.

    The Best in the Series

I've played through all the FF games and with my personal faves being VIII (how many hours spent "drawing" magic? Don't ask!) and FF-X (played through 3 times at least) I can easily say that XII is my new "Best in the Series"

So what makes it stand out? For me, it's just the sheer gameplay. Yes the graphics are better than any of the others, the voice acting is (mostly) very well done and the story is truly epic indeed - but it's just the way the games plays that struck me

Most, who may be used to FF-X's "random encounter" system may baulk at the idea of a "real-time" FF game - I know I did - but give it a shot because, trust me - it works. The best way I can describe it is like an MMORPG, I played EverQuest II for a long time and I'm shocked at how similar FF-XII plays the same way. Basically, as you go through the game you customise your characters - give one a gun, the other a katana sword, the other a sword & shield etc - and along with abilities you give them (summons, magic, heavy/light armour) and the gambit system they'll start to act into roles, for example one of my party will stand back from a fight, hitting enemies with a bow and healing whenever a character gets below 50% HP (via the Gambit system) while my others stand up to the enemy and take the hits - it gives a huge amount of scope for personal customisation

Overall an excellent game, I agree with a previous review - GET THE GUIDE BOOK! I guarantee at least 90 hours of gameplay and the most fun you can have with a FF game since Final Fantasy X...

    Fairly disappointed!!

I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me but I have already completed this game and I am fairly disappointed with it after the long wait to see its release. Dont get me wrong, its still a good game. The characters are awesome and the story is great. I love the character design the best as it was done by the same person who did one of my other favourite games - vagrant story. The graphics are awesome too.

Two things I found that didnt quite complete this game and that is the limitation posed by the license board (ie how you develop your character) as well as the frustration you get from trying to procure good weapons etc. Suffice to say that the license board does not offer the kind of flexibility the sphere grid had to offer. I finished the entire board before even getting halfway through the game, and found many licenses a total waste of space.

Secondly, you can expect a hell of a lot of frustration from bosses both compulsory and optional. I dont want to give any spoilers here for those of you who haven't played it but for those of you who have ...... PALING!!! PALING!! PALING!!! (Why can't our characters do that!!!)

Overall, the game did not provide me with the kind of addicition that the others (with exception of ffx2) offered. I fnished this game quite quickly because of that, and because I basically wanted to move on to other games. Oh and one last thing....if you are the type of person that likes to do sidequests etc, you definitely need a strategy guide for this game. So remember to save some pennies for that :)

    Amazing

I got this game about a month and a bit ago and it was incredible. I had looked into the game alot but I never could have anticipated how good it was. Right off the bat you see the graphics are amazing, plus the story line is extremely good, possibly the best since final fantasy 7. The map is huge, the game is long so its gonna last you a good while. However, I was a bit wierded out by the battle system but after 2 battles you get used to it, and i admit it's much better then the other fight systems they've used up to this point. It has all the races which are in final fantasy tactics advance ( and moogles look cooler. KUPO!) as well as some areas. All in all it's a must have for any final fantasy fan.

    I have imported this game
Has a Vagrant Story look and feel to it.
Like the new battle system and plus the License system.
I still have to play this a little but so far its very good.
Prefer Suikoden 5 to this though so far.
Very good game to pick up as there is lots to do

    Best FF game in ages!

By far the best Final Fantasy game I've played in a long time and the best game to retire my PS2 on.

I imported it and am 45 hours into it and can't get enough.

The graphics are stunning (for PS2 anyway) and the storyline and character development, both socially and statistically are great.

I highly recommend buying it, even if it means buying a PS2 to play it.
