More information

Mass Effect is a science fiction action-RPG created by BioWare Corp., the commercially and critically acclaimed RPG developer of "Jade Empire," "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic," "Neverwinter Nights," and the "Baldur's Gate" series. "Mass Effect" will deliver an immersive story driven gameplay experience with stunning visual fidelity. Published by Microsoft Game Studios, "Mass Effect" will be exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game system.

As the first human Specter – sworn defenders of galactic peace – your mission is to halt the advancing armies of a legendary agent gone rogue. But as you lead your elite team across hostile alien worlds, you will discover the true threat is far greater than anyone imagined.

They will become the center of an engrossing story as they battle against alien life forms to save the galaxy from threatening armies.
  • Player controls the ultimate fate of the galaxy: The player's decisions and actions will serve to shape the destiny of all life in the galaxy, while raising humanity to the pinnacle of galactic civilization via noble means or via tyranny.

At any time during the campaign, a player can choose to explore one of these planets in an all-terrain rover in order to discover new alien life, resources, ruined civilizations and powerful technologies.
  • Digital actors: "Mass Effect" features a huge cast of in-engine digital actors that you will encounter as NPCs, enemies or as party members. Each will have life-like facial and body movements, and an advanced dialogue system will give them engaging personalities.
  • Character customization: Players will be able to choose from a variety of stunning, photo-realistic character appearances at the start of the game, and throughout the game can increase various statistics which will have an impact on their performance during gameplay. Disappointingly short.
4 stars Reviewed by Phil from Auckland, NZ on September 19th, 2008
There's certainly a lot to love about this game but the story is disappointingly short, and there are too few story missions. You feel like you're just getting started when before you know it you're nearing the end.

The bulk of the game is made up of the side missions, and I'm sorry to say they're little more than filler. Despite some of the briefings being voiced by the groovy Lance Henrickson they're repetitive and dull. In each one you drop onto a barren planet that's identical to every other planet (except the terrain's a different colour), drive to a building (one of the same two buildings that's used in every other side mission) fight your way in and either kill someone, talk to someone or destroy something to end the mission and that's that.

I also thought there was too much loot. I got sick of having to pick it up and sort through it. And because you find all the best stuff on missions there's nothing to spend your money on. I had nearly five million credits by the end of the game.

I enjoyed it and was sorry when it was over. It's very good but it's not as mind bogglingly awesome as everyone seems to suggest. But if they came out with an expansion or a sequel right now I'd buy it in a second.

Amazing

Very good game excellent story and looks amazing, there are some long load times and texture popping but otherwise pretty good. However if you own a PC that can handle it the PC version has alot of improvements worth having

Excellent game but repetitive
4 stars Reviewed by Aaron from TE AWAMUTU, NZ on December 5th, 2007
Nice game, but not the best, that’s for sure.

Graphics are excellent and the story is great, if not short in my opinion. The side missions are very repetitive and frankly get really boring and predictable. Just look at the sets, it is the same building every time, all that has changed is the boxes and enemies. Even the planets are very predictable on the side missions.

It is well worth a play through or two and you do get 35+hrs of game play so I can't complain about that.

I will be looking forward to the sequel!!!

The Best RPG Ever

This game will make you bored of shooters, and change the way you look at RPGs!
I didn't notice any graphic glitches or frame rate problems, just texture loading takes a few seconds to load sometimes during cutscenes. Graphics are seriously awesome, like an interactive movie.
The gameplay is so fun. You can choose to follow the epic main story or go off exploring some planets (which there are a lot of!) and drive around in the Mako, which is a lot of fun. There are a lot of side quests to do as well. If you're expecting Oblivion, don't bother. Oblivion was a large free roam world with quests and bland characters. This game is all about the story, the characters and your choices, which makes for an immensely fun game, certainly a huge improvement over KOTOR. You can persue relationships with your crew, learning their backstories and you can romance Ashley or Kaidan (depending on your gender) and even Liara, the Asari alien.
There is so much depth to this game. The Codex is the proof of that. I learned much ME knowledge from it. :) As an example, you don't get Liara straight away, you have to find her and save her. If you go ahead with the main story and then go back and get her at the very end, she'll be slightly mad and hallucinating, because she had been trapped for all that time!!
This is definitely a must buy, no regrets of ever purchasing it game. GOTY, it will be. No other game comes close to the depth of this. If you want to shoot and do shooting missions, that's what Halo games are for. The only negatives is that planet exploring is repetitive (but upcoming DLC will change that) and ME2 is too far away!!

Pretty Average
3 stars Reviewed by Michael from Otago, NZ on December 3rd, 2007
An average game. Not much of a RPG fan myself so I guess thats why I didn't enjoy it.

I played it at my friends house for about half an hour, and 25 minutes of that was talking. I would like it alot more if it had more action, like maybe having missions like having to find a good sniper point and eliminating a vital target to cause a leadership struggle within the ranks of the enemy.

I don't mind the sci-fi but the contant talking puts me off. I just want to fight a war.

REVOLUTIONARY

That's it.In one word I can safely say Mass Effect is amazing.
This is a very short review, however I can safely tell you that ME might have a few bugs, however it has an amazing story, good graphics and well,I believe it's better than Halo3,and since it's a trilogy it's just like the Halo franchise.I recommend everyone buy this game now!

Classic RPG
5 stars Reviewed by Patu from Hamilton, NZ on November 28th, 2007
If you have played any of the Bioware RPGs and liked them... then without doubt you will love this. Its classic RPG, all the elements are there. The action scenes run smoothly and there is plenty of content to play with as far as places and side-stories. What everyone else has written below fairly much says it all.

Do you like RPG... then stop reading and go buy this game :-P

KOTOR Meets HALO?
5 stars Reviewed by Matt from Auckland, NZ on November 27th, 2007
Bioware has done it again.
I was sceptical about Mass Effect before trying it. One of the big enjoyments for Knights of the Old Republic (A must play) for me was the Star Wars immersion and galaxy. The Sequel (Not Bioware) didnt live up to the same standard.
I have never been a real FPS fan and was concerned about the change in combat style. What about the Jedi? Why couldnt they do another Star Wars one? I wondered.

Having played several hours into Mass Effect all I can say is, My god. its awesome.
Its a gritty mash of the character depth from KOTOR and the action of Halo. Sure the combat isnt the most deep out there and the squad commands are limited but its fun! Its not a perfect game, parts of it could be done much better, and possibly were in KOTOR, but its one of those rare games that is greater then the sum of its parts.

Like KOTOR before it this will suck you in and absorb you, an epic cinematic space adventure that is a must own.

RPG of the year.
5 stars Reviewed by Simon from Auckland, NZ on November 27th, 2007
Quite simply, this is the must have RPG for 2007. It has amazing graphics and a great story. From the combat to the freedom of dialog, this game just keeps on giving. From the moment you begin the game it feels epic and has that great "old-school" sci-fi feel.
I purchased this along with Assassin's Creed, another great game, but found myself playing this more.

It just has a great sense of drawing you in and making you a part of it's universe. Free to fight the way you want, say what you want... pretty much giving you, the player, more choices and freedom.
I highly recommend a purchase.

Amazing

Wow, this is truly something to look out for. Just got the game and the amount of detail that has been put into the dialog is awesome. The story definitely helps to set up the trilogy which is to come. This is a definite must buy for those Knights of the Old Republic fans, or anyone else who loves an RPG game with quite a bit of action.

A Friend's Mini Review
5 stars Reviewed by Holly from NZ on November 20th, 2007
A friend from Aussie who got the game early has this to say....This game is so epic, almost like playing an interactive movie with lifelike, realistic graphics. The people you speak to animate much like real people, and it's quite scary! The depth of the game is jaw dropping, and the dialogue confirmed by Bioware is around 2.5 million words! You can talk to almost every NPC you see, although some stand there and seem like decorations as they don't say a thing to you. This game will play with your emotions, you'll become friends with all your party members and see them as real people (that's how amazing this game is). You can even romance one or two, depending on your gender. And your choices will affect your friends, some can even permanently die from your choices! It's hard for me to even choose which two friends to bring along with me as they talk amongst each other more than on KOTOR, and talking to them via the interactive dialogue wheel is so enjoyable. And especially seeing your version of Shepard talking will blow you away! To be clear, this is an action RPG, not a shooter with RPG extras. The shooting is the combat, as the turn based fighting was the combat on KOTOR, so don't get this if all you want to do is shoot things. The graphics, the interactivity, the choices you make, all of this comes together to make this highly enjoyable RPG that will certainly become game of the year! Bioware has crafted an epic game that will keep you replaying many times. This is one for mature players, there is nudity and some cruel things you can do as Renegade that are certainly worse than on KOTOR! Well worth the purchase!

Top-Class Science Fiction

Biowares next RPG!!
5 stars Reviewed by Holly from NZ on September 3rd, 2007
Bioware is one of those rare successful companies that produce excellent games such as Knights of the Old Republic. Whenever I hear of a new Bioware game being released, I know it's not going to be a letdown. Mass Effect is entirely original.
The gameplay looks amazing, you can choose to play like a third person shooter or do combat like KOTOR with turn based play. The graphics look exceptional and the artistic design is very very good. And with Bioware, you know its going to be a lengthy, highly polished game.
The characters are going to be well developed and you'll actually not want them to die. Romance options are available for male and female which will make the game more immersive and fun.
The game is quite similar to KOTOR in the travel system, how you can travel to all kinds of planets on your ship. But unlike the Ebon Hawk, the ship is huge and you can even travel to planets that are not in the main quest. This will make the game hugely immersive, being able to travel around space, going to planets, interacting with characters and doing many many quests.
The new dialogue system is not like KOTOR where you choose what you want your character to say. The responses are short and are on a small pie wheel where you can easily move the analogue stick and choose a response, making talking with characters intuitive and simple. You can even interrupt characters and see how they react.
Mass Effect is going to be highly detailed and an enjoyable movie like experience that you will want to play over and over again. Bioware will deliver another hit game that will very likely be Game of the Year! Worth the pre order!
