Product Description

Resistance 2 transports players across the Atlantic to a besieged 1950s America where it builds on Fall of Man’s legacy. There will be bigger battles, spectacular landscapes and an even more gripping narrative told from Hale’s perspective – alongside an unprecedented online eight-player co-operative mode in which players meet to tackle specially-designed campaigns together.

The Resistance story continues to unfurl with protagonist Sergeant Nathan Hale. Having destroyed the London command centre of the invading alien Chimera, Hale returns to the United States where he becomes part of a special programme known as the Sentinels – a secret weapon against the Chimera assault that the US government knows is imminent. When the Chimera launch a full-scale aerial assault on both coasts, Hale and the Sentinels find themselves in the forefront of the counter-attack.

The game’s multiplayer modes are also set to make a huge impact in the gaming world. Co-operative play, where players team up to tackle a campaign, can often feel constrained in levels designed for single players. Not so with Resistance 2, where squads can undertake a fully independent online campaign built specifically for co-operative play – a feature that demonstrates developer Insomniac Games’ commitment to online gaming. The large scale battles are combined with levels that are designed to be slightly different each time you play. Up to eight players can join forces to face the Chimera together while choosing from three distinct class types. Players can also look forward to vast 60-person online battles in which players join squads with distinct battlefield objectives and fight it out on PLAYSTATION Network, the home of multiplayer online play. The combination of squad objectives and large player-count will give Resistance 2 the perfect blend of epic battlefield chaos and intimate close-quarters combat.

Features:

  • Huge-scale conflict involving gigantic battles against hordes of enemies including new Chimera variants, deadly machines and fearsome boss characters
  • Gripping, atmospheric storyline set in a complex alternate history
  • Squad-based online multiplayer for up to 60 players - with different objectives for each squad on the battlefield
  • New playable characters for co-op mode – wield a chaingun as a Soldier, go Special Ops with a sniper rifle or heal your squad’s injured as a medic
  • Huge online support with full player profile pages and networking through myresistance.net as well as full in-game clan system
  • The third PS3 game from Insomniac Games – developer of hit titles Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction and Resistance: Fall of Man.

Good follow up but not a masterpiece
4 stars Reviewed by Robert on January 4th, 2010
As a follow up to the original Resistance: Fall of Man, it is overall a good game. If your looking for an epic, then you may be slightly disappointed. Dont get me wrong, visually its amazing. Story line is also good, but for a hardcore gamer, especially if your an FPS expert, you will probably have the game completed within a day or 3.

There is a lot of new Chimera in the game and each graphically done very well.

The strongest feature this game has is the online play. Great choices between co-operative and competitive, and with the ranking and medal rewards, it will have you logging in to play again and again and again.

A great shoot him up game

Love the shoot him up games and this one didnt dissapoint. The game is linera but thats ok as the action is nearly constant. The guns and ability to pick up any gun is great. Did suck that you could only carry a few at a time tho. Its been out for a while but stilla good buy.

Best FPS game around...

Resistance 2 the sequel to Resistance: Fall of Man simply improves on the original in all aspects.

The story is immense and you will see when you play that Nathan Hale's Chimeran curse taking the better of him.

The gameplay is incredible. Loads of new weapons such as Bellock and Splicer along with old ones such as the Carbine and Fareye. Plenty of great secondary fire options and grenades are terrific.

Enemies are smarter than ever and will flank you, the sheer numbers has increased dramatically, the Grims (skinny, skeletal like Chimera are in hordes in some areas).

Campaign will take a good 10hrs even on Easy. Up to 25 on Superhuman depending on your skill level etc...

The graphics are brilliant, the lush environments from the jungles to underground and even city look unbelievably realistic - like your there! Weapons and enemies are very well detailed and the Chimera's expressions are great.

Oh yeah...and the super boss the Leviathan...practically Godzilla..., it's the size of a building, need I say more? See for yourself.

Online is the best around - up to 60 player TDM's...Killzone 2 only has 32 and its considered the best shooter ever! Don't let the number deter you, these games are epic and there's plenty of sniping opportunities!
Online is still very active.

8 player online co-op is truely amazing and not to be missed. You can choose to be a medic, spec ops or soldier.

Loads of trophies to gain as well including the infamous "Killing Machine" - get 10,000 kills in online ranked matches. This isn't very hard as there are 60 player games but time consuming - adding extra value.

This game is the best shooter around and is not to be missed.
Easily a 9 out of 10 but this is a 10.

10/10.

Linear but does it good
5 stars Reviewed by Chris on January 17th, 2009
Resistance 2 is a brilliant game for what it intends to do. It is a linear shooter (FPS and shooter mean the same thing btw) and not meant to be compared with such games as FarCry 2 and Fallout 3 (which btw is also not a shooter, but a RPG hybrid).

Why I considered this a four star is because the game is so much more varied than the first Resistance. With new environments, a more brighter colour palette, outside!! :P And the attention to detail is astounding.

What this game does is give an intense and amazing FPS experience with much more varied enemies and a limited but ultimately greater feeling, arsenal of both new and old weapon favourites.

The story was ultimately a cliffhanger but I enjoyed it! :P One thing that definitely has to be mentioned is the online multiplayer which truly is fantastic. Even with the crappy NZ broadband we get here it runs brilliantly and without lag, even with sixty players on screen at once. It is just so well done, and though the experience part of it has been done in a thousand games, it's still nice to see that little 10XP or whatnot float above a just exploded opponents bloody gib. =D

Final List!
- The graphics are stunning.
- The levels are varied.
- The bosses are absolutely amazing.
- The environments are cinematic.
- And the fights are bloody and chaotic.

And personally? Just don't listen to the guy above me. xP

Well... is it just me? Or... o-ver-rated

Hmmmm,

I found it derivative, linear as a pencil and when I hired it for two nights with the Olympics (of all games), I spent most of the time going hard on the latter instead.... striving for online records and so forth...

I know, I know... but bear with me...

Firstly, it is so linear that for the five hours I played it, I could just run full-tilt, killing, and I I died I would get to rethink when came back somewhere very near or in same place....... no pressure, thus no immersion - pretty simple really.... You see, you can't even take a wrong turn... is that realistic? Varied?

The great games: Far Cry 2, Shadow of the Colossus, even many of the Metal Gears etc etc.... don't treat you like you are retarded.

Imagine playing a game of rugby where you could only run forward.... cos that makes sense to them...... um, perhaps, f*** off? lol...

think about it.... I felt suffocated and restricted.....

I don't really think Fallout 3 is that great, but even I know why it will be game of the year after playing it for five hours or so also.... It is varied, expansive as hell, you have freedom and you have options.... Resistance 2 is like the evil doppleganger to Fallout 3.

If you like that sorta thing - knock yourself out.

And once you know what's coming etc, unless, as they do in one or three scenes, try to make life difficult by sending one million enemies at you simultaneously (yes, I got past, but not skillful, just ridiculous and trial and error, which is lame i.e. hide on this staircase or die, go to this part, or die..... like, okay sir!! $%#**), it is a bit like playing frikkin' Dragon's Lair from the 80s... lol!!

Why can;t I apply my own lateral and superior thought and be the boss of the gameplay? It looks great and plays smooth etc only becos the game is like an alley running thru a town..... it is easy to decorate and plaster with illusion. Resistance 2 is that alley...

Try and run by and you die inexplicably ....... kill first however and continue b/c now you can finally move on b/c someone opened a door apparently weighing three hundred tonnes for you..... or there was a piece of rubbish in the way a child could have moved...... a boss or something insignificant... you get the idea...... apparently Hale can kill thousands of mutant Chimera but can't pick up a or slide a box aside.... wow! You got my adrenalin pumping with that realism and immersion.....

Stupid.

Sorry folks, but this is just an action game, a shooter at best and an fps in your dreams. It does not deserve to be called an fps. It's Operation Wolf with bells and whistles. End of story.

I don't really remember dying when fighting big bosses, they were too easy to kill with a modicum of lateral thought and worked out pattern first time thru each one (more or less), but also so silly, that happy to quickly get by...

I guess it IS visually excellent but also, well, silly.... and silly doesn't really get me going sorry...

Also, so far, no manning of vehicles or any variation aka older games like the first Call of Duty (MW).... just a few shots from a chopper briefly...

Give me Far Cry 2 any day.... I am stunned that Resistance 2 is even considered a better game. There is certainly no accounting for taste.....

Also, from what I have read I made it over half way thru the single player campaign in that five hours I played - and so, if you can campaign online together, well, all well and good, but if it is just map fighting etc, well, I am over that s***.

If you are going to judge the game - judge it. Not online, not broadband dependent, just the game.... and this is not a five star single campaign masterpiece... end of story.

All hail the Hale?

Personally, it is alright. But I'd rather play the Olympics when faced with a choice... clearly....... so, make of that what you will....

This is definitely a great kid's game or juvenile mind game / time passer, but it is no brain teaser - and no game of ANY year.

Sorry.....

:)

An amazing follow-up, but a bit too short.

Having got the original game with my PS3 and loving it from the moment I started playing it, I was really looking forward to this follow up. The first thing I noticed is the advancement in the look of the game, the 1st was great, this is amazing, the characters and environments are incredibly realistic. The new weapons are some of the best I have seen, in fact, I think the Splicer may be the greatest gaming weapon ever conceived, who doesn't love a weapon that fires a fast moving, spinning circular saw blade that bounces off the surrounding and slices off the limbs of an enemy until there is not enough left of them to attack you?

I love the advancement of the story in this game, to see what Hale goes through is pretty tragic and the new enemies that he fights put other game baddies to shame.

Overall, I had a heap of fun playing this, my only gripe, it was way to short... but I guess that leaves more time to play the online stuff, which I will give a go tomorrow. If you have a PS3, buy this, you will not be disappointed.

Ok but crap ending

The single player campaign is amazing visually but not that fun to play and I hate the ending with a fiery passion. Multiplayer rocks even though the only decent modes are deathmatch and skirmish. Also I have never been in a 60 player match. Overall I like Resistance FOM better just because of the atmosphere even if this is the better game.

A huge amount of gaming

The follow up game to the popular launch title for the PS3, Resistance: Fall of Man. The game continues the story of Nathan Hale after his defense of England in the first game. This time around he's back in the USA defend his homeland against the alien invaders. While battling the Chimera in the states, he's battling the virus inside himself as he fights to maintain his humanity and protect the rest of humanity at the same time.

This is a game that comes in 3 parts. There's the single player campaign that follows Hales fight against the Chimera with his squad or by himself. Thankfully this game doesn't feature the ever spawning enemies that over squad games have had in the past so you can rely on your allies to assist you in progressing through the game but not to the point where you're unneccesary. The game features a number of different locations and opponents and really pushes the story along well, seems like a logical progression from the first story. It is by no means perfect though. If you look around at any given encounter you can normally find an appropriate weapon eg LAARK for titans and the boss battles feel a little too scripted, with no real variation to how to deal with them. On reflection the game on the whole feels a little to linear, but this isn't any different to other contemporaries in the genre such as Halo. The final gripe is the lack of coop throughout the main story, but don't quit here, keep reading though!

Next up we have the online competitive mode. Seems well balanced in my limited play, with both races being equal. I think my only real gripe so far is that the carbine (I don't like the bullseye too much personally so don't use it on Chimera) seems to lack stopping power, of course this could simply be a lack of skill on my part. The levels are a decent size to not give the feeling of claustraphobia but not so large that you can avoid the enemy. I think my main concern is this mode is that respawn timer is randomly selected between 5 and 10 seconds, as this can drag on too long when you get the 10 second respawn, really the 5 seconds would have been a good length. Its also worth noting that a second player can jump on and play online off a single PS3, moving into split screen, the graphics do take a noticable drop, but that was all. We had 3 people playing online at once (on 2 PS3s) and had no lag at all.

The final piece of this game is also my personal favourite, online co-operative mode. This mode pits up to 8 players against the AI in various scenarios. Like the competitive mode two people can play off a single playstation. Players take on the role of one of three classes, the Medic who can heal, the Spec Ops who uses precision shots and provides ammo packs, and the Soldier who can take the damage and has a shield. Each class plays very differently and relies on each other to succeed. This mode is insanely fun though, especially when you get good players across all classes. The game scales based on number of players and levels, so the more high levels you have the harder it gets. The AI gets better and the enemies gain more health. There is some strategy involved though, as several situations cannot be solved by simply running in guns blazing, unless you want to die. I cannot say enough good things about this mode though, its some of the most fun I've had in a game in a long time, It would be worth buying and playing even if this was the only mode included.

Overall this game is fantastic value for money, you get 3 different game modes, each of which contains additional sub-modes and variations. The game also contains trophies to get, which are well done in my opinion, with a mix across all 3 game modes. They lack a little in skill based achievements as most of them are x number trophies but these are very minor things. I can recommend this game to anyone who played the first game, or anyone who likes FPS, or anyone who enjoys co-operative games.

Absolutely Phonomenal

Of the many games released so far in 2008, it is hard to choose what to buy. Resistance 2 is quite possibly this choice you will want to make. Because it is PS3 exclusive, it takes advantage of the hardware and therefore the 'Dualshock 3' controls are superb.

I really enjoyed the first Resistance, however the second installment exceeds it in every way. If you are purchasing a PS3 right now, this is the game to get.

A fabulous artistic graphical style gives the title great looks and certainly, along with the various soundtracks and effects, engages the gamer in an absolutely awesome experience.

Overall, gameplay is addictive, presentation is superb, and you will certainly get value for your money as the 60 players online feature is perfect, and even the single campaign is of decent length. Resistance 2 is definitely a Game of the Year title in my books!

A much bigger game.
4 stars Reviewed by Marshall on November 21st, 2008
Everything about this game is bigger than the first, Single player campaign, competitive multiplayer and the new addition of co-op multiplayer which is hilarious and fun.

The campaing feels like it was on a much bigger budget then the first and while the ending leaves a few things up in the air (obviously setting up for a third) the whole package is just tidier. Set pieces are epic, bosses feel more like bosses and the story moves along nicely. Some people complain about the lack of a narritive but I prefer the immersion.

Co-op multiplayer is just pure fun, there is a bit of strategy in there with the different classes but mostly a good time to run through a stage with others blowing stuff up. Sounds repetitive and dub but it's really a blast.

Comp multiplayer, 60 people while really fun to play gets a bit much sometimes, things feel just a little impersonal. However the guns are still good and the maps still top quality.

All in all a great game!!!

Epic FPS

The single player is epic in scale which is practically worth the price of admission by itself! Then you throw in the extremely engaging co-op and competitive play over the PSN then you start to get the perfect game! I think we finally have our halo3 for the ps3!

Multi-player additions

I managed to get my self a Beta trial code for the multi-player,and i must say i was impressed. Not only do you have the standard Death Match (DM) and assorted variations (TDM) Capture the flag etc but new to this game is a co-op online play (which is what i spent 99% of my time on) and it is very good. You can have a team of anywhere from 2 to 8 vs the AI.The difference is you can choose as either of the 3 classes they have.Soldier/Spec ops or Medic, each with there own special abilities. The Soldier has the more powerful weapon but is prone to running out of ammo, which is where the spec ops comes in.One of the spec ops abilities is to pass out ammo when anyone is running low (which is often) and with the Soldier being out in the front (well he should be) hes going to get hit,and hit often, which is where the Medic comes in.One of the prime jobs of the Medic to to keep everyone healthy. Both the Spec ops and the medic have their own weapons (and by all accounts the Medics is quite good, but i was only the soldier) but their primary job is to keep the Soldier armed and healthy. The ideal situation i found, was to have a Soldier/Spec ops and medic travel together staying behind the soldiers shield (a secondary"weapon" for the soldier) and just keeping him full of ammo/health,because it does take a hell of a lot of ammo to kill some of the Chimera,so team work and to a lesser degree coms is essential, other wise you'll be finding yourself watching the counter counting down untill you respawn quite often. If you do work in tandem with others, you should find it quite easy to stay alive and finish the co-op play (well the one level available to those of us that got in the trials)Graphically its a step up on the original game, and most of the old guns are still there with some new additions.I didnt play a lot of the DM mode, but what i did see looked fairly similar to the original (not that thats a bad thing:).

So all in all,i was very impressed with it,i have pre-ordered it and cant wait for it to arrive :) Bring it on!
